CIRCA Pintig participates in Art. Heals
Chicago, IL – CIRCA Pintig returns to live, in-person performances with an excerpt of Lani Montreal’s “Panther in the Sky” after two years of pandemic lockdown. Directed by Mignon McPherson-Stewart, the play gives voice to four mothers from different ethnic backgrounds as they deal with the loss of their teenage sons because of gun violence. The excerpt performance is CIRCA Pintig’s contribution to Art Heals, a curated performance and visual art exhibition featuring music, dance, theater, poetry, multimedia and visual art created to bring the arts and the Chicago community together to help heal and connect after the effects of the global pandemic over the last two years. Organized by Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble, Art. Heals goes on stage on May 6, 7, 13, 14, 2022 (Fri-Sat, 8pm) at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 1350 W. Foster, Chicago. Gallery opens at 7:30pm. Tickets are on sale now for $20 general admission (adult non-students), $13 student general admission (high school students over the age of 16 and college students) and free general admission (under the age of 16).
Like many other arts organizations, CIRCA Pintig switched to the virtual platform to continue its creative and community work through a cultural program titled “Monthly Beats”. This project featured poets, playwrights, music groups, video artists and artist-activists from different parts of the globe who shared their creative expressions contextualized within their own social and political realities. CIRCA Pintig also conducted an educational monthly workshop called “Racial Healing and the Subversion of Hate” as a response to the disturbing patterns of physical attacks against Filipinos and Asian Americans that started in 2020 and continues to this day. For 2022, the workshop moves out of the virtual platform and reaches out to different groups with CIRCA Pintig artist-teachers conducting in-person workshops with the theme ‘Dismantling Hate’ in partnership with student organizations within Chicago. It is within this scenario that Art Heals finds its meaning and purpose. CIRCA Pintig’s performance is supported in part by grants from Asian Giving Circle and Resist.
